The collection of graphic art by Alexander Ivanov (1806-1858) includes more than 700 independent pictures and about 40 albums.
The completeness of the collection allowed made it possible to organise several successive mini-exhibition. The first of them is titled The Annunciatmin and opens the graphic cycle Bible Sketches. The artist devoted to it the last decade of his life – from the late 1840s to the beginning of 1858.
The first exhibition of the series includes works on gospel subjects about miraculous signs and events related to the birth of John the Baptist and the birth and childhood of Jesus Christ. The main scenes of the gospel story took the central part of the individual walls of the building. Around these large compositions, it was planned to place numerous stories from the Old Testament, which told about the wonderful news and prophecies of the appearance of the Messiah. These stories have traditionally been interpreted as semantic parallels to the Gospel events.
