The exhibition of the St. Petersburg Theater and Music Museum timed to the 150th anniversary since
the birth of Alexander Benoit focuses on his theatrical heritage.
The exposition includes sketches and photographs, models and stage costumes from more than 20
performances designed by the artist - from the first experiments on the Imperial Stage (Richard
Wagner's opera "The Death of the Gods") to the works of recent years for the Milan theater "La Scala"
and the troupe of Sol Yurok, the largest American impresario of the XX century. Especially detailed are
the materials for the ballet "Petrouchka" to the music of Igor Stravinsky – the most significant
performance in the work of Alexander Benois, for which the artist created both the design and the
libretto.
Here are sketches for the Mariinsky Theatre, Sergei Diaghilev Ballets Russes, Ida Rubinstein's company,
Paris Opera, and for performances on the stage of the Moscow Art Theatre and Petrograd Bolshoi
Drama Theater. These are more than 100 designs from the collection of the St. Petersburg Theatre and
Music Museum, Peterhof, and Saint Petersburg State Theatre Library.
