The State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg is going to hold an exhibition "In the Ashes of History" by Zhang Huan.
A series of new paintings by the artist is dedicated to the coronavirus pandemic and is called "Love".
The name of the new series of his works is a reference to the tragic event when a pregnant woman died from coronavirus. The exhibition has not yet been opened, although the opening was expected to take place on May 15.
About 30 works will be presented to the audience at this exhibition: many of these works are exclusive to the Hermitage as they were created under the impression of visiting this museum. The series of works “Love” belongs to the “Red Series”, which marked the artist’s return back to painting.
Zhang Huan is one of the main creators of Chinese contemporary art. He was the author of interesting performances, then created sculptures and paintings: the main material was ashes, which remained from burning incense, acquired by the artist in Buddhist temples.
