The exhibition in the Ilya Ostroukhov House tells about one of the most emotional trends in Russian culture and takes visitors to the 18th century.
The exposition highlights the subject of punctuation in the Russian literature of sentimentalism.
It consists of four sections, each of them related to a certain punctuation mark. A unifying element is the story Poor Lisa by Nikolai Karamzin.
First, visitors find themselves in Lisa’s Room (an exclamation point), filled with objects of young girls’ exuberation. The second room (a question mark) tells of new words that appeared in the Russian language in the era of sentimentalism. Unique book titles and maps are presented here. The third room is imbued with the spirit of understatement (dash), and the fourth is full of melancholy (ellipsis).
These emotions are illustrated with watercolors and engravings of the 18th-19th centuries.
