A member of the World of Art association, Konstantin Somov (1869-1939) loved to turn to the images of the past and paint the courteous life of the 18th century. The exhibition, dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the famous Russian artist, presents more than 100 paintings.
Konstantin Somov was born in St. Petersburg in the family of the Hermitage keeper Andrei Somov in 1869 and was surrounded with art from early childhood. He studied under Ilya Repin at the Arts Academy, and later on co-founded the World of Art society and magazine jointly with Sergei Diaghilev. In 1923 he went to America as an authorized representative of the Russian Exhibition and never returned to Russia. In 1925, the artist settled in France.
Konstantin Somov painted portraits of his famous contemporaries, Sergey Rachmaninov and Alexander Blok among them, “cloak-and-sword scenes”, landscapes, and revealing illustrations for the courtesy collection “The Book of the Marquise”.
