Major Paleo-Zoological Task Solved

A group of scientists from Russia succeeded in finding out how mammoth species appeared.

Researchers have studied genetic material extracted from a leg of the mammoth, which lived about 33 thousand years ago. Frozen body of the animal was found in the Anui river basin in the northeast of Siberia.

Studies of the mitochondrial DNA confirmed the hypothesis stating the habitat of the common ancestor of all three mammoth species to be in Africa. African elephants became an independent species about six million years ago. Two million years have passed, and mammoths also separated, thus being mutant Asia’s elephants.

High quality of the mammoth’s tissue allowed scientists to finally find a solution to another paleo-zoological task.
