Siberian Scientists Found a Way to Improve Photonic Crystals for Reducing Cost of Gadgets

Thanks to the development, mobile devices should become lighter and more compact.

Scientists of the Krasnoyarsk Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Siberian Federal University and Moscow State University have proposed a new method for making the structure of a photonic crystal with improved spectral characteristics. These crystals are used in smartphones and gadgets, and so this method will make them cheaper.

“The method devised by our group makes it possible to replace the combination of several filters with just one element. This results in reduced light losses on optical elements. The device becomes lighter, smaller and cheaper. This provides a great opportunity to integrate elements into existing devices, including various gadgets and smartphones, the market of which is constantly growing, and the functionality is expanding”, - the deputy director of the Kirensky Physics Institute, Andrey Vyunyshev, explained.
