Avalanche Safety Service Will Be Created In Kirovsk

The Administration of Kirovsk (Murmansk Oblast) announced the creation of a municipal service of avalanche safety. As the website of the municipal administration informed, the new unit will become a part of the Kirov Directorate of Civil Defense and Emergency.

      The service will consist of six specialists in monitoring and forecasting avalanches, prevention at avalanche sites threatening the housing and transport infrastructure.

      Kirovsk is located on the left steep bank of Neva River, near its confluence to Lake Ladoga, 33 km to the east of St. Petersburg. It has Nevdubstroy railroad station and a wharf. The town with the area of 86 sq. km has the population of 26.641 people (as of 2010). It was founded in 1929 as Nevdubstroy Settlement during construction of the hydroelectric power station (Kirov power plant from 1943, presently 8th HPP) on the left bank of Neva. From 1936 it was the Kirov industrial township (8th HPP). Since 1953 it has been the town of Kirovsk named after S.M. Kirov (1886-1934), whose name is associated with the initiative of construction of this major power plant.

      Near the town there is the Breaking of Leningrad Blockade museum-reserve created on the site of fierce battles for Leningrad during World War II. The reserve includes a diorama dedicated to the break of Leningrad blockade. It was built in the Marino Village in 1985, and consists of the Diorama and an open-air museum with a collection of tanks from the battles), the memorial complex Nevsky Spot, Sinyavino Heights, and the historical site of blockade breakthrough.
