A businessman from the Russian city of Krasnoyarsk wants to become the owner of the world’s largest yacht. Sergey Zyryanov, a billionaire, says he needs it for an ecological voyage round the globe.
Born in 1960, he mastered two foreign languages – English and Spanish – and went into the construction business. In 1991, Mr Zyryanov headed the Life company engaged in commerce, geological exploration and tourism.
He is known to help orphanages and the disabled. He is also involved in the Nature’s Life Belt project aimed to secure pristine areas.
Now Mr Zyryanov is anxious to outdo Roman Abramovich, at least in the size of the boat. It is expected to be 200m long while the yacht being built in Germany for Mr Abramovich is just 160m. Mr Zyryanov’s went to Poland to ask a local engineer to build it. The engineer has cooperated in some other projects with Russian seamen.
The $80m boat will be controlled electronically by one person only. It will house a helicopter pad, a swimming pool and a winter garden.
The Krasnoyarsk billionaire pledged he will use the boat for an expedition around the world, involving representatives from nine countries, and will later hand it over to the world community. It will have no owner, he remarked in an interview to a local newspaper.
The results of the trip will provide for an ecological design of our planet, which he calls NEO.
