Venezuela Buys 100,000 Kalashnikovs

The first part of the Kalashnikov submachine guns has been delivered to Venezuela as part of the contract Venezuela and Russia earlier signed.
All in all, 100,000 Kalashnikovs will replace outdated Belgian FAL rifles made in the 1950s. Venezuela may increase the number if it goes on to build a construction plant to produce Kalashnikovs at home.
Venezuela decided on AK-103, and also helicopters and fighters, after the USA refused to supply arms and spare parts to the materiel sold earlier. Hugo Chavez, the president of the country, signed contracts worth $2.7bn with Spain and Russia. Spain is to equip Venezuela with border patrol.
