Remains Of Famous Icon Painters Andrei Rublev and Danila Cherniy Discovered Recently

Bones of famous Russian icon painter Andrei Rublev and his elder co-worker Danila Cherniy, who had died around 1430, were discovered under the altar of the Andronikov convent in Moscow. During excavations stones of ancient cathedral were found. Such sites are usual for burying church hierarchs, thus decision to continue the diggings was made.
Four burials were found after works were completed. Expensive church clothes gave ground for the hypothesis that those were the remains of the first abbot of the convent Andronik and three other hegumens Savva, Alexander and Efrem. Fifth burial was discovered later, when the walls of the excavation crumbled.
The conclusion that the remains discovered belong to Andrei Rublev and Danila Cherniy was made due to the fact that the finding was a re-burial of ordinary monks aged around 50 and 80 years. Marks on the skull showed that someone had searched for the bones with a probe, because exact place of the burial was unknown. Experts say that those monks should have been somewhat famous for their bones to be re-buried in such a place.
