Russia is losing around 40 billion roubles a year due to corruption, says the spokesperson of the Investigative Committee.

In a radio interview, Vladimir Markin insisted corruption-related losses in Russia are lower than in the EU.

Markin said Russia doesn’t need a nationwide drive to root out corruption because it is more common for lower-level income groups like teachers and doctors who receive financial gifts as a way to increase their meagre salary.

According to Markin, 11,500 corruption-related cases were opened in the first six months in 2015, as a sign of tougher control over these nefarious practices.

His statements run counter to the widespread perception among the people, and earlier estimates of the losses due to corruption have been much higher.

Anti-corruption watchdog Transparency International has moved Russia up six points in its 2013 Corruption Perceptions Index, CPI, from 133rd place out of 177.

Ranked as 133rd, it’s on par with Azerbaijan, Mali and Lebanon, but lagging behind other former Soviet republics like Georgia (49th), Armenia (94th), Moldova (102nd) and Belarus (123rd).

Led by countries like Denmark New Zealand and Finland, the rating reflects the perceived level of corruption in the public sector. Last year, Transparency International has changed its methodology, making the index results easier to read and understand.

Russia has been plagued by corruption, making it less appealing for foreign investors and stifling domestic entrepreneurship.
