Competitions in national sports of the indigenous peoples of the North and a number of cultural activities dedicated to the indigenous peoples of the North start in Murmansk.
The events are held within the frame of the 80th Festival of the North. “Several dozen of herders take part in it, including remote villages of the Kola Peninsula - for example, Krasnoshchelye, where you can only get through frozen lakes, and by helicopter in summer” - the representative of the Sports Committee reported.
The sports part includes two days of sports competition popular among the peoples of the North - reindeer sled races, lasso throwing, towing of a skier by deer. These competitions are held in Murmansk annually, and each time they become one of the most spectacular and popular events of the Festival of the North. At the same time a Saami village will appear in the Uyuta Valley of Murmansk where the main events of the Festival take place. Guests and athletes will be able to see the life of this people, hear performances of folk groups, and taste national dishes. The Festival of the North is held in Murmansk and the regional towns annually in spring since 1934, it was not even suspended during World War II.
