Russian and foreign scientists recently discussed a possibility to merge two scientific projects: Russian “KLPVE” - (Space Rays with Extremely High Energies) and JEM-EUSO (Japanese Experiment Module – Extreme Universe Space Observatory).
“KLPVE” is an orbital mirror telescope, which consists of a large concentrating mirror and a photodetector array made of photomultiplier cells. “JEM-EUSO” is an orbital wide-angle optical telescope, containing three Fresnel lenses. Both devices were designed to study space rays with extremely high energies, originating outside our Galaxy. Currently they are at the design stage.
The idea is to merge two devices, however, the problem is in the difference in their construction. Researchers discussed four variants of a new device. The first one, which is considered to be the most viable, is to place a correcting lens between the mirror and the photodetector. The second is make three telescopes out of the two, the third – the build a “JEM-EUSO” analogue on the basis of the lens optics only; and the last, but not the least is to create a mirror analogue of the Schmidt telescope.
