Happy Tatiana’s Day!

The Russians celebrate the Day of St. Tatiana on January 25. For over 250 years it has been celebrated as Students’ Day in Russia, however officially it is celebrated for the second time only.

It was on this very day, 251 years ago when the Empress Elizabeth signed the decree on establishing the Moscow University. Since then St. Tatiana is considered to be the patroness of students.

The Moscow State Lomonosov University will become the centre of celebrations. Students, professors and the rector will have a party together to be crowned with the traditional drinking of medovukha.

However the holiday has expanded far beyond the limits of the Moscow State University and is celebrated all over Russia. For example in Krasnoyarsk the city governor holds an annual ball today. The residents of Nizhi Novgorod will choose the best Tatiana among the students of the city.
