Bronze Chekhov's characters by the Drama Theatre have become the hallmark of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.

Bronze sculptures, depicting scenes from the "Fat Man and the Thin Man", "The Lady with the Dog", "The Man in a Case" and "Kashtanka" have appear in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, right in the square between Chekhov-Center and Museum of Anton Chekhov's book "Sakhalin Island". Regional library staff conducted one year-long survey on Sakhalin, bringing out the most popular and well-known characters. It turned out that Chekhov’s Kashtanka (70% of the votes), a red-haired dog that rambled around the city and returned to her family, is the most famous and dearest character to Sakhaliners.
