Three administrative cases are launched against prominent Russian human rights activist Lev Ponomaryov after his refuse to present documents on the NGOs he heads.
The cases were launched on charges of “failure to meet the lawful demands of a prosecutor,” the spokeswoman of the Moscow Prosecutor's Office said. In his turn, Lev Ponomaryov says he rejected to provide documents because he considered the prosecutors’ actions as illegitimate. Ponomaryov has already filed a complain about it to the Moscow court.
On March 25, Moscow prosecutors arrived to inspect the offices of the For Human Rights organization and two other NGOs. However, their demand to allow an inspection was rejected by the organizations' head Lev Ponomaryov.
The law forcing non-government organizations (NGO) engaged in political activity with foreign financing to be classed as "foreign agents was signed by Russian president on July 2012. Right after that, several human rights activists said they would not comply with the law, which was basically made to cut all human rights activity in Russia.
