Bone Carving Exhibition Opens in St. Petersburg

Interregional exhibition of wood carving Soul of the North has opened in St. Petersburg Modern Arts Center.
      
      This year the exposition presents works from collections of wood carving artists of the Yamal-Nenets and Chukchi Autonomous Regions, the city of Omsk, the Arkhangelsk and Tyumen Regions, Krasnoyarsk Territory (Taimyr) and the Sakha Republic (Yakutia).
      
      The program of the exhibition includes the practical seminar Bone Carving Art of the Peoples of Russia, a competition of bone-carved artworks and an exhibition fair of bone-carved items.
      
      In Russia there are a few traditional bone-carving schools: Chukchi, Tobol, Lomonosov, Yakut, Yamal and Taymyr ones.
      The number of artists aspiring to revive national traditions in bone-carving art is growing nowadays. At the same time there is a heightened interest in bone-carving art as one of the elements of national culture.
      
      The exhibition runs till June 13.
