Andrey Nemzer

Russian young countertenor Andrey Nemzer has won North America’s most prestigious opera singing contest, receiving a $15,000 cash prize. It is the first time in history when Russian musician wins Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.

The other four winners are from the US: soprano Janai Brugger, baritone Anthony Clark, tenor Matthew Grills, and mezzo-soprano Margaret Mezzacappa. They received $5,000 prizes.

Andrei Nemzer was sent to the contest by ittsburgh’s Duquesne University, where he is currently studying at the faculty of Music Performance.

He already has several international singing awards and is regarded by musical critics as one of the most promising Russian vocalists.

On March 18, the finalists performed at the Grand Finals Concert, accompanied by the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra under maestro Andrew Davis.
