The pictorial photography trend that originated in the world art in the late 19th century, flourished in Soviet Russia in the 1920s, when in Europe it was almost forgotten. The opposite of documentary pictures, pictorial photography reaches after the level of painting. The range of subject matter chosen by Russian artists follows the tradition of world pictorialism: landscapes, nudes, and picturesque old estates.
Works by Russian pictorialism masters of worldwide acknowledgement were considered an aesthetic opposition to the Soviet ideology. In 1935 all photographers-pictorialists were debarred from going on their artistic activity. It is only recently that historians have turned their attention back to this remarkable phenomenon of Russian photo art.
