Valery Gergiev, the famous Russian conductor and the art director of Mariinsky Theatre has invited Moscow stage director Kirill Serebrennikov to stage the opera Falstaff by Verdi.
Another famous opera by Verdi, Nabucco, has been staged by Dmitry Bertman in the new season. “I cannot become a brake for domestic talents – they should also get opportunities to work”, - says Gergiev.
The Mariinsky’s art director is going to ‘strengthen’ Boris Godunov staging by Victor Kramer (premiered in spring 2005) and bring back to stage Andrey Tarkovsky’s version of this opera (which was transferred in 1990 from Covent Garden to Mariinsky by Gergiev).
Gergiev also mentions, that ‘western stage-directors are still better than ours are’ and so he goes on inviting foreigners too. Thus, the season 2005-2006 will see David Mc Vicar’s staging of the famous Turn of Screw by Benjamin Britten.
A large-scale symphonic program of 2006 will be dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the composer Dmitry Shostakovich.
The theatre will be touring much. In particular, the Shostakovich program will be on in a number of Russian cities. Ring of the Nibelung will be shown by Mariinsky troupe in Korea, the USA and Germany.
