Monument to Anna Akhmatova in the yard of the University of St.-Petersburg
31.08.2004 00:00

Anna Akmtova has taken place side by side with Alexander Blok now: a bronze monument to the Russian poetess was opened on Monday in the yard of the Faculty for Philology of the State University of St.-Petersburg.
“The name of Anna Ahmatova is really sacred for us and it is wonderful that her monument has been placed here – we have special associations with her family – many of us were lucky to attend lectures of her son Lev Nikolayevich Gumilev” – said the rector of the State University of St.-Petersburg Lyudmila Verbitskaya.
In her poetic testament Anna Akhmatova asked to fix up her monument on Shpalernaya Street nearby the prison of People’s Committee for Internal Affairs where her son was on remand. However the university staff found the place in the university yard quite apt as it is connected with life and creation of Akhmatova: there is already a monument to Alexander Blok, also a poet of the Russian poetry “Silver Age”. Besides she lived on Vasilievsky Island not far from the university where her both husbands studied.
The author of the monument is sculptor Vadim Troyanovsky. Sculptures designed by him decorate St.-Petersburg, Yaroslavl and Sevastopol. Besides his works belong to collections of the State Russian Museum, the Tretyakov Gallery, museums of Krasnoyarsk, Nizhy Novgorod and Samara.
”I consider Anna Akmatova as one of the greatest figures among poets, it was she with whom the “Silver Age” started"– the sculptor says.
