May, 9th will see the opening of Russia’s first national Museum of GULAG History of the Mari-El Republic (Mari Golgotha) in Yoshkar Ola.
The museum organizer and director is Nikolay Arakcheyev.
The museum presents more than 4000 documents, exhibits and photos. It is located at the address: 102, Sovetskaya Street, Yoshkar Ola, the official site of Mari State University informs.
GULAG was the central administrative board of forced labor camps, labor settlements and prisons in 1934-1960, the major body of the system of political repressions in the USSR.
The GULAG system included 53 camps with thousands of camp branches, 425 colonies, and over 2000 special commandant's offices. In total there were over 30 000 places of confinement in GULAG system.
