Green Peace of Russia welcomes the decision of Moscow authorities to cancel the building of a waste incinerator plant in the north of Moscow, but apprehends that it might be constructed in Moscow suburbs instead, the ecological organization reports.
It is a reminder that Yury Luzhkov, when he was still the Moscow mayor, signed Decree 313 on construction of 6 more waste incinerator plants in Moscow by 2012 - in addition to the 3 plants already existing. Those plans on garbage burning caused mass protests among the Muscovites, and so the building of combustion plants was shelved.
In March, 2011 the new Moscow mayor Sergey Sobyanin announced that there would not be any waste incineration plants in the city. However, the ill-starred Decree 313 has not been cancelled still.
Presently the government of Moscow and administration of the Moscow Region are working on the joint solution of the domestic waste problem.
“We sincerely hope that not only city authorities, but the regional authorities also have learnt the Moscow lesson. We expect that the negotiations are aimed not at the discussion of shifting the combustion plants outside of Moscow” - Head of the toxic program of Russia’s Green Peace Mr. Kiselyov pointed out.
