      Meanwhile, Ulan-Ude is officially celebrating its 345th anniversary, but the deputies want to prove that their city is older than Moscow, Kiev, and even Veliky Novgorod.
      
      Ulan-Ude Administration and historians have started working on the specification of the foundation date of the capital of Buryat Republic.
      
      It should be mentioned that according to various sources, the origin of Veliky Novgorod can be dated to year 859. As the Russian Primary Chronicle mentions, it “was founded by Ilmen Slovenes during their settling after migration from Danube”. According to archaeological data, the earliest of the investigated wooden roadways in modern Veliky Novgorod are dated to the 10th century.
      
      At the same time, as chronicles state, Ulan-Ude was founded in 1666 as Cossacks’ winter-abode on the right bank of River Selenga at its confluence with Uda. In 1678 it was already known as a stockade town — an outpost of Cossacks’ advance to the east. In 1775 it was named Verkhneudinsk and got the status of a town and an emblem in accord with decree by Catherine II.
