Famous Samson Sculpture to be Restored in Peterhof

Samson Rending Open the Jaws of the Lion – the symbol of Peterhof will be renewed for the jubilee of the post-war unveiling of Peterhof fountains.
      
      For the first time in 63 years the famous fountain sculpture has left its pedestal and moved to a restoration workshop.
      
      Samson Rending Open the Jaws of the Lion is one of the most memorable images in Russian culture. It symbolizes glory and heroism of the Russian people.
      
      The well-known sculpture created by Mikhail Kozlovsky had remained in its place since 1947. Last time the sculpture was restored back in 1928.
      
      It is planned to have renewed the sculpture’s gilding and repair the pedestal, which is in an emergency condition, by April, 2011. Restoration works will cost 14.6 million rubles.
