First Transplantation of Self-Growing Trachea Performed Successfully
Professor Paolo Macchiarini

For the first time in our country a patient got a trachea, made of a donor framework and her own cells, which later will develop into necessary tissues.

New technique is aimed at abandoning life-long therapy with immunity suppressing drugs, which is necessary, when a patient receives a donor organ. The technique was developed by Professor Paolo Macchiarini from Florence University. First, a trachea was grown in a bioreactor, however, later surgeons decided to use patients body as a reactor.

The patient is a 26-year-old girl from Kazakhstan, who has got into a serious road accident in 2006 and spent 9 months in coma. The surgery lasted for 6 hours. The patient is reported to feel well now, which is 16 days after the operation.

Four more patients are waiting for transplantation.
