A delegation from Australia and the SKA (Square Kilometer Array) project has recently visited Russia in order to invite Russian researchers to participate in the project.
The SquareKilometerArray project is aimed at building a giant international radio-telescope. The telescope has collector surface of about 1 square kilometer. The facility’s sensitivity is expected to be tens of time greater, than any existing facility can boast.
The SKA radio-telescope is an interferometer, made of thousands of smaller telescopes and detectors, located 0.01-3000 kilometers away from each other. Signals form all devices are received and processed by a giant computer. Location of the facility will become clear in 2012 with most probable courtiers being New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa. Russia is welcome to take part in this ambitious project.
