New Technology for Traffic Signs
A holographic sign, indicating speed

Russian physicists suggest using holograms for attracting more attention of drivers to various traffic signs and road indicators.

Our roads are often oversaturated with information, which successfully distracts drivers’ attention. Russian researchers suggest using iridescent holograms as an alternative technology for producing traffic indicators, road markings, and other technical means of traffic regulation.

One holographic sign will contain several messages, which are visible at different angles. Therefore, each road user gets necessary information depending on his position on a road. Maximum viewing angle for a hologram is 180°, and minimum is less that 1 degree. However, a hologram can show different sign depending not only on viewing angle, but also on distance to this hologram. Holographic signs can also be “taught” to shine brighter or to blink, when a vehicle approaches, in order to attract attention.

Holographic blinking signs can inform pedestrians about a car ahead, and drivers – about a pedestrian crossing.
