Getting richer in roubles. The other way
19.07.2005 00:00

Faking roubles, as a 300% profitable business, could win you a fortune in Russia. Local craftsmen do not like to play with euros, but roubles are an easy game. The share of fakes is 100m roubles against 1,239bn currently on hands.

Last year the Central Bank announced a new issue of banknotes addressing security issues. To make yourself richer, you would now need a multimillion worth computer, it said.

But do not count your chickens before they are hatched. The amount of fakes out there in the regions makes local and federal officials shudder. The problem is that fakes are often brought from outside – Latvia, Kazakhstan, Iran, Poland, and even Lebanon.
