New Plant-Protecting Antibiotics Created
Various species of Streptomyces

Russian biotechnologists found new antibiotic agents, aimed at protecting plants from pathogenic fungi and viruses.
New antibiotics, chrisomal C and globerin, were extracted from Streptomyces fungi and received names after these organisms: Streptomyces chrysomallus and S. globisporus. These agents affect phytopathogenic yeasts and fungi, as well as plant viruses, like tobacco mosaic virus, but arent toxic for plants.
After extraction and drying, chrisomal C and globerin look like a yellow powder, insoluble in water. These antibiotics are a good alternative to various chemicals, because they are more specific and less toxic for the environment. Moreover, they rapidly decompose in natural conditions, thus helping maintain ecological balance.
