New Precise Drug Delivery System Developed
Poly-3-hydroxybutyrate in bacterial cells

Russian chemical physicists suggest packing drugs into mixed biopolymer capsules, which allow delivering treating agents to do their job directly and prolonging their action.
Biopolymer mix consists of bacterial poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) and chitosan. Both polymers are biocompatible, which means that organisms water and enzymes make them break into nontoxic products. PHB is hydrophobic (repels water), and chitosan absorbs water, thus various combinations of these polymers can results in mixtures with desired properties. Moreover, such mixtures are easier broken by water and enzymes than single-component polymers.
Delivery system was tested on rifampicin or rifampin, a broad-spectrum antibiotic, which was encapsulated into biopolymer mix. Analysis showed that it took the drug has been released from the capsule for 28-30 days. Release speed depended on both diffusion process and capsule decpcomposition.
