Archeologists have found more than 300 ancient artifacts within two weeks of work at Pyatnitsky Pit in the town of Staraya Russa of the Novgorod Region.
Excavations are conducted in the cultural layer of the late 12th - early 13th centuries.
The majority of finds are traditional for that epoch, whereas an amazing find is a children’s bow, which is a smaller copy of a real weapon. Most likely, it served as a toy to a boy about three years old. An arrow, also small, was found nearby the bow.
The archeological pit takes the area of about 300 square meters.
The season of excavation will finish at the end of August.
It is a reminder that Staraya Russa used to be a town second in importance among Novgorod lands in the epoch of Middle Ages. The first excavations there were performed in 1939, and since 1966 archeologists have permanently worked in Staraya Russa.
