Dostoevsky Metro Station Decorated with Pistols and Axes

A new metro station has been opened in Moscow; the design of the Dostoevsky Station is rich in mosaics depicting scenes of murders and suicides.

On one of the walls Rodion Raskolnikov from Crime and Punishment is raising an axe over his victims: the old usurer Alyona Ivanovna and her sister. Nearby a character of The Possessed Kirillov has put a pistol against his temple. Next to him Verkhovensky from the same The Possessed is leveling a pistol at another character.

"What did you expect to see? Dances? You don’t find them with Dostoevsky. I tried to convey Dostoevsky as a personality, an artist, and a philosopher. And there is nothing depressive or oppressing here. The station design is reserved, serious, stern, but not gloomy. I do not think that monumental painting is only a way of ornamentation. It inevitably has to have some morals in it as well. I was not going to make a goody out of Fyodor Mikhaylovich, commented Ivan Nikolaev, the author of mosaics.
