1709—The Battle of Poltava takes place.
It is the main battle of the Northern War of 1700–1721. The Russian Army under Peter the Great’s lead defeats the Swedish Army. The king of Sweden, Charles XII flees to Turkey. The Battle of Poltava is one of those victories which decide peoples’ fates. The military power of Sweden is smashed, and Russia becomes one of the Great Powers.
