Dates in History
1220—Alexander Nevsky, prince, is born.
Alexander Nevsky is the grandson of Yury Dolgoruky, the founder of Moscow. At the beginning of 1240 a strong anti-Russian coalition arises, which includes Livonia, Denmark , Sweden, and The Hanseatic League. The Swedes assault Russia first, and on July 15 on the banks of the Neva River Alexander Nevsky defeats an outnumbering enemy. This is the reason why he is called Nevsky. In April 1242 the famous Ice Battle takes place on the Chud Lake. Russian troops beat the main force of the Lithuanians, thus establishing peace on the western borders of Russia. Alexander Nevsky is canonised by the Russian Orthodox Church.
