1919—The first subbotnik is conducted at the Moscow-Kazan railroad.
Subbotnik (from “subbota” – ‘Saturday’) is a week-end day, which people spend voluntarily cleaning the streets or their working places, etc. The first Subbotnik is initiated as a result of Lenin’s call to improve the work of railroads.
