Dates in History
1045—Construction of the oldest Russian cathedral – Sophia Cathedral in Novgorod – begins.
It is only few years younger than Sophia Cathedral in Kiev, and it is a century older than Notre Dame de Paris. During a long period of time it is the center of political and social life: archive, library, and treasury are located here. Notable townspeople are being buried in the cathedral. Today the cathedral is the main Novgorod building, one may say, it personifies the city.
