Boris Eltsin is the first president of Russian Federation. On December 31 1999 he resigns from the post.

1884—Yevgeny Zamyatin, writer, is born.
In 1920 Zamyatin writes his highly acclaimed novel “We”, which is published in 1924 abroad and only in 1984 in the USSR. “We” is an anti-utopia describing the possible world of communism, which seems like a place nobody would want to live in.

1857—Vladimir Bekhterev , Russian neurophysiologist and psychiatrist, is born
Today Vladimir Mikhaylovich Bekhterev, famous Russian neurophysiologist and psychiatrist, who studied the formations of the brain and investigated conditioned reflexes, is born. To the lay public Vladimir Bekhterev is known for Bekhterev’s disease, pelvospondylitis. Bekhterev’s most important work, however, was in the study of reflexes and the morphology of the brain. He is the founder of psycho reflexology, transmitting to humans the same pattern of thinking that Pavlov had developed in his work on conditioned reflexes in dogs, and he used similar experiments. Bekhterev is thus a forerunner of behaviourism. His works are epoch-making, but at first received little attention as they were published in Russian.
