1957—Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik the world's first artificial Earth satellite.
It completed 1440 orbits around Earth, exciting worldwide sincere wonder and admiration. 4 months later it burnt up in the atmosphere.

1916—Vitaly Ginsburg, outstanding Russian physicist, is born.
He wins Nobel prize in Physics in 2003 for pioneering contributions to the theory of superconductors and superfluids.
