1598—Boris Godunov is elected as tzar of Russia.
Tzar Fyodor is unable to rule the country due to his mental conditions, hence his guardian Boris Godunov rules Russia until Fyodor’s death in 1598. After that Zemsky Sobor (gathering of representatives of cities and provinces in an effort to solve administrative and political affairs) elects Boris as the new tzar. His reign sees the beginning of the Time of Embroilment: he is executed by rebels, there are no more direct heirs to the throne left, the country is torn from inside by False Dmitry I and other impostors, and from outside by Polish interventionists.
