2004—Mikhail Gorbachev receives Grammy Award.
Mikhail Gorbachev, the first and the last president of the USSR, receives Grammy Award in the "Spoken Word Album for Children" category for his work on the "Peter and the Wolf" CD. The CD is based on Prokofyev’s musical fairy tale. Gorbachev narrates the prologue and the epilogue to the story.

1837—Great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin was fatally wounded in a duel
In the duel at Black River,near St. Petersburg,the poet was wounded by his adversary Edmond Dantes.He died in two days. Russian literary critic Belinsky said : "The sun of Russian poetry has set".

1834—Dmitry Mendeleyev, chemist, is born.
In 1869 he discovers the periodic law of chemical elements. In accordance with it he develops a periodic table of chemical elements, which is named Mendeleyev periodic table after him. His calculation also underlie the recipe of classical Russian vodka.
