27 January — International Holocaust Rememberance Day



International Holocaust Rememberance Day was established by the UN decree in 2005, at the UN session commemorating the liberation of Auschwitz prisoners.

1967—Outer Space Treaty Is Opened for Ratification
Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies was ratified by the USSR, the UK, and the U.S. on January 27, 1967. Effective as of October 10, 1967 the treaty states that the exploration of outer spaces was to be free for all countries globally.

1948—Mikhail Baryshnikov, the famous ballet dancer, is born

1940—Isaac Babel, writer, dies.
Babel writes novels which show Soviet army during the Civil War as it is, which image doesnt agree with the Soviet government propaganda. Thus he makes a lot of enemies, and is arrested in 1939, and executed in 1940, although his death remained unacknowledged until 1954.

1924—Lenins funeral.
Architect Shchusev receives an order to build mausoleum three days prior to the funeral. The mausoleum is built in time, but its made of wood. Later it is rebuilt of granite.

1879—Pavel Bazhov, fairy tale writer, is born.
Bazhov writes several fairy tales based on folklore of Ural and publishes them as a collection of stories Malachite case. These fairy tales become classical just as Russian National fairy tales.

1826—Mikhail Saltykov-Shedrin, writer, is born.
Saltykov-Shedrin writes satire novels, which describe the political and social life of Russian people so precise, that they never become out-of-date, even today.

1820—Russian round-the-world expedition consisting of two sloops East (led by Bellingshausen) and Peaceful (led by Lazarev) discovers Antarctica.
