Dates in History
1908—Lev Landau, physicist, is born.
Landau receives Nobel Prize in physics in 1962 for fundamental theories concerning condensed matter, especially liquid helium. Several foreign academies and scientific societies choose Landau as their member.

1905—Tzar troops shoot down pacific demonstration in St. Petersburg (Bloody Sunday).
People demand establishing an 8-hour working day, abolishing of overtime work, guaranteed minimum wages, etc. The demonstration is backed up by general political strike, in which partake about 150 thousand people. A petition is produced, in which Bolsheviks include some political demands, such as ending the war with Japan and separating the church from the state. Troops shoot at the demonstrators, over a thousand people is killed. There are strikes throughout the country. Thus starts the first Russian Revolution.

1898—Sergey Eisenstein, film director, is born.
Eisenstein is considered among the most influential directors in the history of motion pictures. His films include Potemkin (1925) and Alexander Nevsky (1938), his first film with sound.

1440—Ivan III, Great Muscovy Prince, is born.
During his reign ends the Tartar-Mongol occupation of Russian lands.
