1963Nikita Khruschev Announces the USSR Working on H-Bomb Amidst the sharp political conflicts of 1961-1963 Nikita Khruschev's announcement of the USSR having successfully created an H-bomb had an explosive effect by itself. This was the last project in which Andrei Sakharov was fully involved, and nobody made a secret of this being a manifestation of power on the part of the Soviet Union.

1547Ivan IV the Terrible is crowned Tzar and Great Prince of All Russia. | On January 16, 1547 the Russian Prince, Ivan IV Riurikovich was embalmed as the tsar of Russia. Thus Moscow Principality became the centre of a newly proclaimed tsardom. Little less that two centuries later Peter the Great was to become the first Russian Emperor, once again changing the status of the country to that of an empire. 2012 marks the 465th anniversary of the historic coronation of Ivan IV.
