The Rocket and Space Corporation Energy took out the invention patent on the transformabable manned module for the Russian segment of the International Space Station and perspective orbital stations.
It was reported by the press service of the RSC Energy to TASS.
"The module consists of a central hard compartment of constant volume and a transformable multilayered containment unfolded around it. The size and ergonomics of the hard compartment is in exact accordance with operating areas of traditional compartments of the space station", - the press service explained.
The transformable capsule consists of various functional layers: anti-meteoroid and anti-radiation protection, thermal insulation and the outer base layer. In transit condition the capsule is compactly laid round the hard compartment. In the outer space it is unfolded into operating position, and pressurized volume is increased several times, the RSC Energy pointed out.
The size and shape of the hard base compartment make it possible to place an additional radiation shield as an instrument frame inside the module. Therefore protection level for the crew on the long stay onboard the spacecraft is enhanced.
"It is assumed that use of the transformable modules will increase the pressurized portion of the Russian ISS segment and perspective space stations, improve protection of crew members from ionizing radiation, meteoroids and particles of space debris", - the enterprise empasized.
The inflatable modules have good mass-dimensional characteristics in the fold position, which is an advantage for orbiting them with existing and perspective carrier rockets, as well as transporting them by air or by train to the launch site.
