Russian impressionism is the trend of the Russian school of painting of the late 19th - early 20th centuries, which shows distinct features of the French impressionism, however, with no less pronounced national specifics.

Potters of the Old Russian state made tableware of a variety of forms. At the bottom of their works Russian handicraftsmen put special brands in the form of triangles, crosses, squares, circles, etc.


Bast braiding is one of the oldest handicrafts in Russia. Since time immemorial peasants used bast for making bast shoes first of all. Bast shoes became a sort of a symbol.


The distinctive Vyatka craft of pine root braiding has been known since the late 19th century.


Birch bark is a beautiful and enduring material for wickerwork. Smooth, clean and lustrous birch bark is well extendable, hardly breakable, and waterproof.


Willow rod braiding appeared as a handicraft in Russia in the 19th century. Its origin was in many respects promoted by the European fashion for wickerwork and wicker furniture.


Straw application and decorating wattled products with straw have been a traditional craft in Russia for a long time.


The turning craft masterpiece was a 100-piece wooden egg (with its walls thinner than an eggshell) turned by the master Fyodor Romakhin. It was here where Vasily Zvyozdochkin with his companions created the first Russian nested doll (Matryoshka).


Wood turning was traditionally used in Russia for making tableware, vessels and spindles. With the advent of spinning wheels in the second half of the 19th century turners switched to making toys.
