The highly emotional and heart-piercing ballet composed by Soviet classic Aram Khachaturyan was authored by Nikolai Volkov. The libretto is based on documents and works of art about the epoch of antiquity. The action is set in Rome, where the consul Crassus has just returned with a victory. He captured the ruler of Thrace, Spartacus, and his beloved Phrygia. Now Phrygia should gratify Krass during the holiday, where Spartacus is taken out as a gladiator. The battle in full-face helmets is won by Spartacus, who is grief stricken as he finds out having killed his own friend. The shock makes him recollect his strength and fight for freedom. Spartacus gets support from the gladiators and rebellious townsfolk. To liberate Phrygia, they dare to enter the villa of Crassus, and now they can do is win or die ...
