Rich history of the memorial estate is primarily associated with the name of its last owner, the renowned Russian writer Vladimir Nabokov.
The memorial estate Rozhdestveno is situated in a picturesque area of the Gatchina District in the Leningrad Region. The main manour house was built at the end of the 18th century. It is a wooden two-storeyed building with a stone socle and a belvedere. The house is decorated with four-columned Ionic porticoes.
The estate belonged to several owners until the 1890s, when it passed into possession of the large-scale gold industry entrepreneur Ivan Rukavishnikov. During his lifetime the house was repaired, and the estate got enriched with a hen house and a stable, a tennis court and a greenhouse. After his death, the manor was inherited by his son Vasily (1901), and then by the latter's nephew, i.e. Vladimir Nabokov.
After the revolution the manor alternately houses a hostel, a school, and a collective-farm museum. In 1957 the permanent exhibition Past and the Present of the Rozhdestveno Village and Its Vicinities was opened there. Since 1987 the estate has been officially recognized as the historical and literary and museum of Vladimir Nabokov. In 1995 the house suffered a fire, and its restoration lasted for as long as 7 years.
Presently the manor keeps a unique collection of original subjects that belonged to the writer's family. A family album of photos of the Nabokovs — Rukavishnikovs is of great interest. The museum boasts a unique collection of butterflies. It is accompanied with an archive and a scientific library, as well as 20 employees, including 2 research associates. 220-year-old trees grow over 16 hectares of the extensive park area. Healing springs come out of red-coloured rocks in the far corner of the garden. .
The memorial estate holds exhibitions of paintings by famous artists, photo exhibitions, book presentations, friendly tea parties, and public recitals. Organizers arrange performances by invited theatrical companies, classical music concerts, reciting competitions, and themed nights.
