Reconstruction of The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts will cost 22 billion rubles, the head of Pushkin Museum Marina Loshak said at the press conference in Moscow.
The museum management and the Ministry of Culture presented an updated concept of the Pushkin Museum development, which was designed in cooperation with Avesta Group Consultancy. According to the museum management, "the concept will allow designing and creating a new museum complex that meets all the innovations of 21st century and turning it into one of the world's most popular museums. It will give visitors the opportunity to learn the history of the world art culture in all its diversity."
"We want it to be not just a museum of several buildings, but something more than that. We want this to be a living organism, so that person, each time when coming to the museum, could earn something new that he could get experience and knowledge of it, even after the museum closes. We very much look forward to the educational nature of the concept," Mrs. Loshak said.
The exhibition space will expand at more than twice. The plan on the preparation and celebration of Pushkin Museum's 100th anniversary is aimed at construction of the museum complex and gradual development of museum functions in a separate quarter and in surrounding areas.
Between Bolshoy Znamensky Lane, Znamianka and Volkhonka streets are over 20 monuments of architecture, history and culture, as well as archaeological sites preserved cultural layers of 14-18 centuries old Moscow, including the White Town. The project is scheduled for completion by 2020.
"Now the area is 49 thousand square meters, but after the reconstruction it will increase to 105 thousand square meters," Mrs. Loshak said. According to the management of the Pushkin Museum, increasing the exhibition space will help to solve the issues of lack of the facilities to store exhibits; organization of the unique scientific library; scientific and restoration workshops and exhibition halls.
